Living and working in Central Western NSW.   Practising potter and calligrapher for the past 40 and 23 years respectively. In 2004  completed a Master of Arts (Visual and Performing Arts) through CSU, Wagga Wagga where the main emphasis of my studies was the presentation of calligraphic works on clay.

Artist Statement

Inextricably linked to the historical account of writing, inscription on clay boasts a lineage which reaches back to the very inception of writing.

Central to the aims and objectives of my work is the integrated use of clay and hand rendered letterforms. As a calligrapher I am interested in the particular aspects and qualities which govern calligraphy and sets calligraphic writing apart from other forms of visual text.  As a potter I am interested in using clay as the medium for writing, rather than more traditional and familiar surfaces, such as paper.  This, in itself, is quite a challenge as clay bodies vary enormously, and differing textures and qualities have a significant impact on both choice and implementation of scripts.

Calligraphic presentation utilizes time honoured ceramic techniques such as incising, carving, sgraffito and brush lettering. Surface treatments are approached in a number of ways, in order to fully maximize the impact of the lettering.  Pieces are polished to refine the surface of the clay and then either gilded, glazed or smoked.  The intuitive marks and colours of the smoke and resins from the wood are of particular interest to me.

The “writing”, or text, on my works constantly explores the theme that words have power and influence over the human spirit.  Words convey important and powerful messages which inspire, encourage, enthuse, nurture, stimulate and motivate.  The overriding challenge for me lies in presentation of a credible amalgam of calligraphic skills and clay working expertise.
